“Calypso” Book Reivew

Title: Calypso

Author: David Sedaris

Star Rating: 4/5

Synopsis: Sedaris shares stories from his life as he bridges the gap between adult siblings that miss their mother, and sister. They make memories together and Sedaris and Hue buy a beach house. It’s touching, light, and laugh out loud funny. I recommend listening to it, so you can have Sedaris in your ear on the way to work reminding you about what’s really important in life.

Memorable Quote: “Happiness is harder to put into words. It’s also harder to source, and much more mysterious than anger or sorrow, which come to me promptly, whenever I summon them, and remain long after I’ve begged them to leave.” -David Sedaris

My Take: Do you want to read a story about loss, family, relationships, and feeding tumors to snapping turtles? Look no further. Sedaris is charming and unabashedly funny. He says what so many of us want to say but hold back on. Especially when we are trying to find the humor in a moment so many others might only see grief in. Although I found myself incredibly jealous of the several homes he describes and owns, I also found Sedaris down to earth, honest and fun. Get ready to google image some of the clothing items he mentions, and cry from laughter or otherwise, when he navigates the heartbreaking loss of his sister and mom.
