What would have happened if Lydia Bennet kept in touch with one of her earlier interests, Captain Carter? Today, in my AP English Literature and Composition class, we wrapped up Volume 1 of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Students discussed which characters they liked or didn’t like, and we had a quick write that challenged them to write a letter in the voice of an underestimated character. Here was mine, from Lydia to Captain Carter. Enjoy!
Dear Captain Carter,
Where have you gone off to? My dear sister Catherine and I had ever so much fun dancing and talking with you and the other officers last month. Meryton is just not the same without you. Hopefully, your regiment hasn’t been posted somewhere too awful or boring. Although, I would be remiss if I didn’t say that part of me secretly hopes you are somewhere dull, so that the time you spent with us shines even brighter by comparison.
There are now new officers posted here, and I dare say they are nowhere near as handsome or as jovial as you were. One Mr. Wickham caught my sister Lizzy’s eye, but she did not notice how he glanced my way when her back was turned. I haven’t the heart to share with her my revelations about Wickham’s wandering ways because, poor Elizabeth, does not get interested in the opposite sex very often. I love and admire her so much, but often wondered if she and her dear friend, Charlotte Lucas, might simply be happier to keep their own company.
All this to say that you are missing out by being away so long. Wickham might be a bit too dull and serious to tempt me, but if you do not hurry back, who knows? Maybe another gentleman, like Jane’s Mr. Bingley, will come along and sweep me off my feet!
Do write soon, and remind me of the fond times we spent together. I fear I might forget them!
